The use of barter and a minor inconvenience easily compensates for the cash savings. And it's being done by some of the largest and most successful companies in America.
The most successful endeavor in the history of sporting events (over $700 million in gross sales) used barter extensively -- their message was loud and clear -- barter pays!
Here's the story:
The 1984 Summer Olympic Games, held in Los Angeles, under the entrepreneurial leadership of Peter Ueberroth, became known as the most successful sporting event. (As a result, Ueberroth was later named Time magazines' 1984 "Man of the Year.")
One of the major reasons for the fabulous success of the games revolved around Ueberroth's use of barter, where he and the Los Angeles Olympic Committee traded the use of the Olympic logo to corporations in return for their services. In the book Making it Happen, the author (a Los Angeles Times writer) pointed out how Ueberroth's insistence on using the bartered services enabled the games to turn such a profit.
"The Olympic Committee saved money by routing its traveling staff members circuitously in order to use United Airlines, an Olympic sponsor which, as part of its payment (for licensing the use of the logo), had given the committee a large travel credit. Staff members sent to New Orleans might accordingly go via Denver, because that was the only way they could go United..."
