Beautiful wooden platter made from Oregon Myrtlewood, which is sometimes called California Laurel. This piece of Myrtlewood has a consistent light brown color throughout (no sapwood), with a nice size area of small burl knots. It has nice chatoyance (shimmer) in this area although the pictures may not show it.
The dimensions are 12-1/8" diameter x 1-3/4" tall. The rim is 1-3/8" wide with the center recess being 9-1/2". I refer to this as a small platter or large plate, which is a handy size as it will fit in a kitchen cabinet. The foot is wide and stable, and is decorated with several flat beads.
Finished with Odie's Oil, which is a food safe oil that doesn't have any toxic solvents, driers or hardeners. Odie's is so durable that it's also commonly used as a finish for wood flooring. If it can stand up to that then a platter is no problem. To me quality is not just in how the bowl is made or what type of wood is used, quality also means using the best finish you can if you want your bowl to last and look good for years.
