Beautiful Cuban Mahogany wooden bowl, also referred to as Genuine, West Indies or Spanish Mahogany. There are many species of Mahogany, you might be familiar with or have heard of African or Honduran Mahogany. "Cuban" or "Genuine" Mahogany is typically only found in tropical climates. Genuine Mahogany colors can range from pale pinkish brown to a darker reddish orange. This bowl had a small hairline crack in the rim that I stabilized with two Koa "stitches" or splines.
The wood for the bowl came from the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean where it is imported by friends of mine. They are the only importer of Genuine Mahogany in the US. The trees come from private land in Saint Lucia, with government permission and CITES documentation. Due to the landscape of the island harvesting is done by hand, therefore placing a more natural limit on the amount of trees harvested. The pictures show the bowl from all 4 sides.
The bowl measures 11" diameter x 3" tall, which is a nice size for a variety of uses. You can use this bowl for anything that you would normally use a bowl for, such as a salad bowl for two, a bowl of pasta, popcorn, potatoes, vegetables, any hot or cold food.
Finished with Odie's Oil, which is a food safe oil that doesn't have any toxic solvents, driers or hardeners. Odie's is so durable that it's also commonly used as a finish for wood flooring. If it can stand up to that then a wooden bowl is no problem. To me quality is not just in how the bowl is made or what type of wood is used, quality also means using the best finish you can if you want your bowl to last and look good for years.
